Pericarditis

Treating pericarditis with homoeopathy

The pericardium is the membrane that surrounds the heart. Unusual chest pain may be a sign of pericarditis. This condition is caused by a virus, just like the flu. An affected person may recover spontaneously or after having sustained a shock. Unlike other heart diseases, pericarditis is a pathology that rather affects younger subjects. Apart from a virus, pericarditis can be caused by a bacterial infection, tuberculosis, kidney failure or an autoimmune disease. Nevertheless, this case of pericarditis is extremely rare.

Symptoms

Pericarditis is characterized by sharp pain felt behind the breastbone. The pain then radiates to the neck and shoulder. It is alleviated by the seated position or when the patient leans forward. Swelling of the abdomen or legs is also a characteristic symptom of pericarditis. Sometimes, the patient experiences breathing difficulties, shivers and suffers from mild fever. In some cases, general exhaustion can be a sign of pericarditis.

Recommended dosage of homoeopathic remedies

Kalium carbonicum is a broad spectrum homoeopathic remedy that can be used to treat various heart diseases. It is therefore recommended for the treatment of pericarditis, in a 7-CH dilution, in which case 5 granules need to be taken twice a day. When pericarditis is caused by myocardial depletion or an extrasystole, the proper homoeopathic treatment will consist of combining several remedies, such as Apis, Bryonia alba and Arsenicum album. The doctor may also prescribe Bryonia alba in dilutions ranging from 4 to 15 CH.

When should you consult a doctor?

Pericarditis frequently begins with a fever and relatively intense pain in the chest. The patient may gradually or abruptly weaken, depending on the disease’s progression. Given that it is not worsened by physical exertion and may be benign, it is best to consult a doctor if the chest pain is persistent. Furthermore, a medical consultation is recommended when the patient’s health start to deteriorate and he or she is subject to coughing fits.

Pathology and homeopathy are two fields of scientific research that go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, homeopathic research on a disease is always accompanied by a pathological study of that disease. Pathology is the scientific field that studies diseases, while homeopathy is a gentle method for treating diseases. Homeopathic treatment follows the principles of similarity (Similia similibus curentur or "likes are cured by likes") and comprehensiveness. There is no universal treatment for a given disease; it must be adapted to each patient.
