Diarrhoea

Relieving the effects of diarrhoea with homoeopathy

The digestive system of humans is one of its Achilles heel, and some pathologies often cause acute or chronic disorders such as diarrhoea. Possibly fatal to infants and very challenging for adults, diarrhoea should always be quickly taken care of.

Diarrhoea, a frequent and unpleasant disorder

Diarrhoea is among the diseases that humans must face from their first few months well into adulthood. These types of disorders affecting the digestive system are indeed very common pathologies, yet their manifestations are very unpleasant and even humiliating. Many factors can cause diarrhoea and usually they are only the consequence of the infiltration of a foreign body in the human body. Parasites, bacteria and viruses are thus the main causes of diarrhoea. Thus, poor food hygiene usually exposes a person to attacks from these foreign bodies. But sometimes, diarrhoea can also be explained by the body’s intolerance or inability to process certain types of food. Some drugs also have diarrhoea as a possible side effect. In very rare cases, these disorders can also result from psychological problems, stress or a significant nervousness. In infants, diarrhoea can also occur during teething and the increased salivary secretion it causes. Depending on the causes, diarrhoea may be chronic or acute and last for several days.

Main symptoms

Diarrhoea always manifests itself though a significant increase in stool frequency. The victims are then forced to go to the bathroom at least three times a day and the resulting stools are of liquid or semi-liquid form with a colour ranging from yellow to green. Usually, people affected by such disorders also suffer from abdominal pain. These signs are common to all types of diarrhoeas, although each pathology comprises a series of additional symptoms. Thus, vomiting and fever may accompany these common signs of diarrhoea. In some cases, a feeling of heavy fatigue and empty stomach can also manifest themselves.

Homoeopathic remedies for relieving diarrhoea

Apart from taking homoeopathic medicines for each type of diarrhoea, it is also important to drink plenty of water. In fact, these disorders may cause severe dehydration, especially in infants and young children. Thus, there are various homoeopathic products that can help them better manage different types of diarrhoeas, depending on the symptoms that appear.  To deal with diarrhoea caused by eating fruit, Oleander is the ideal remedy. Aconite is however a more effective remedy when the disorder is caused by a cold snap occurring in the stomach. Parents should also administer Podophyllum to their children when they have diarrhoea during their teething periods. This same product is also ideal if the stools are abundant, of yellow colour and contain bile and if the patient is prone to cramps and cold sweats. Magnesia carbonica is an effective remedy for infants suffering from diarrhoea, more specifically for those who have watery stools of greenish colour and of strong enough smell.

In addition, China has emerged as the most suitable homoeopathic product in cases of diarrhoea caused by taking certain types of drugs like antibiotics for example. This same product can also help those who suffer from painless yet tiring diarrhoea, with flatulence throughout the abdomen. If diarrhoea intensifies after each meal, taking Natrum Sulfuricum is recommended. In the case of diarrhoea that occurs after an excessive consumption of alcohol or laxatives, Nux vomica is often the appropriate solution. For the case of burning stools accompanied by bilious vomiting, Iris Versicolour is considered to be the best solution. As for diarrhoea of psychic origin, it can be relieved by taking Gelsemium. Regarding confirmed cases of food poisoning, they can be treated with Arsenicum Album.

When should you consult a doctor?

Diarrhoeas are disorders that are difficult to manage, especially when certain signs appear along with the usual symptoms. In such cases, medical consultation is imperative because, most of the time, some specific druges need to be taken without delay.
Thus, when an infant quickly loses weight and is struck by heavy fatigue or sleepiness, medical advice becomes more than necessary and hospitalization is to be expected. Persistent diarrhoea that does not improve after three days of treatment should also lead the affected person to seek further medical attention. Similarly, if the faeces contain blood or mucus, the patient must also consult a doctor. Finally, many tropical diseases that can cause acute diarrhoea cannot be treated by self-medication. Thus, if the symptoms of diarrhoea occur after a trip to a country known for its health risks, it is best to consult a doctor directly.

Pathology and homeopathy are two fields of scientific research that go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, homeopathic research on a disease is always accompanied by a pathological study of that disease. Pathology is the scientific field that studies diseases, while homeopathy is a gentle method for treating diseases. Homeopathic treatment follows the principles of similarity (Similia similibus curentur or "likes are cured by likes") and comprehensiveness. There is no universal treatment for a given disease; it must be adapted to each patient.
