Premenstrual syndrome

Alleviating premenstrual syndrome with homoeopathy

Approximately 75% of women experience some type of discomfort just before the beginning of their menstruation period. These premenstrual symptoms can be very painful and unpleasant, but homoeopathy can alleviate them and relieve patients with the use of simple remedies that are deprived of side effects.

Causes of premenstrual syndrome

The exact causes of premenstrual syndrome have not yet been precisely determined although it is known that women who suffer from this condition are usually extremely sensitive to hormonal fluctuations that occur during the menstrual cycle. Moreover, it has been proven that the most affected women are those that smoke, are exposed to stress, are sedentary, or do not sleep much. Family history, an excessive consumption of caffeine, alcohol, and salt as well as calcium, magnesium and vitamin B deficiency  are also factors conducive to this syndrome.

Symptoms

The symptoms of premenstrual syndrome usually manifest themselves by pelvic heaviness, general fatigue, breast tenderness and swelling, headaches, abdominal cramps, muscle pain, acne and hot flashes. They will also include a change in mood, feelings of irritability, aggressive behaviour, depression, crying spells and even increased or decreased libido.

Homoeopathic treatment of premenstrual syndrome

To overcome the effects of premenstrual syndrome, the hormonal system must be completely rebalanced, so as to alleviate the most intense and bothersome symptoms. Consequently, the use of Pulsatilla is indicated against symptoms like mood disorders, crying bouts and feelings of abandonment. To fight off feelings of indifference and disinterest, bad moods and susceptibility, one will rather need to turn to Sepia, as this remedy is much more effective in this particular case. To minimize the discomfort experienced during the premenstrual period, it is advisable to take a weekly dose of Folliculinum 15 CH over the course of three months.

Note that Pulsatilla may also be administered to alleviate sensations of pelvic heaviness. To fight off weight gain and water retention during menstruation, it is recommended to take Natrum sulfuricum and Progesteronum 7 CH on the cycle’s 14th and 21st day. To relieve swollen and painful breasts, it is also possible to administer 5 granules of Lac caninum 9 CH per day from the onset of pain until the following menstruation period. There are also many remedies designed to fight off headaches linked to the premenstrual period. Among these, one may include Bovista 5 CH, of which 3 granules will need to be taken 3 to 5 times a day. Finally, Cocculus indicus 9 CH is effective against nauseous states, dizziness and feelings of faintness.

When should you consult a doctor?

Premenstrual symptom is not really dangerous, it is very inconvenient at best; however some rare cases may lead to more serious symptoms. Thus, know that medical consultation is essential if any of the following symptoms occur: pain during sexual intercourse, eye disorders or blindness, severe headaches and diplopia.

Pathology and homeopathy are two fields of scientific research that go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, homeopathic research on a disease is always accompanied by a pathological study of that disease. Pathology is the scientific field that studies diseases, while homeopathy is a gentle method for treating diseases. Homeopathic treatment follows the principles of similarity (Similia similibus curentur or "likes are cured by likes") and comprehensiveness. There is no universal treatment for a given disease; it must be adapted to each patient.
