Veratrum album

Veratrum album, a homoeopathic remedy effective against various diseases

Veratrum Album is a homoeopathic remedy extracted from the rhizomes of White Hellebore, also called White Veratrum. Veratrum album is used to treat stomach problems, certain gynaecological conditions, and spasmophilia. Given that the plant is poisonous, its use requires utmost precautions.

Food poisoning

If food poisoning leads to gastroenteritis, the warning signs like severe and acute diarrhoea can be treated with Veratrum album. This homoeopathic remedy is particularly recommended in case of food poisoning caused by the consumption of seafood, fish and shellfish. The warning signs of these intoxications can sometimes be a cold feeling that passes through the entire body and a sensation of fullness in the abdomen.

Dysmenorrhoea

If menstruation is painful or if the blood flow is irregular, Veratrum album 15 CH will restore the balance. However, it is advisable to take it from the first day of menstruation in order to prevent ailments from appearing. Veratrum album can also be taken if the menstrual spasms are so strong that the patient feels the need to bend over to relieve the pain.

Traveler’s diarrhoea

Traveler’s diarrhoea is a disease that is generally contracted in tropical countries. It is characterized by painful and frequent diarrhoea, combined to nausea and vomiting. Known as “traveler’s diarrhea” it can be treated with Veratrum album from the onset of the first symptoms.

Choleriform diarrhoea

This type of diarrhoea presents symptoms similar to those of cholera, such as colic pain, abundant stools, and the patient’s constant need to rehydrate. In this case, it is recommended to take 4 to 6 daily doses of Veratrum album 5 CH. The intake must be of 3 granules every time.

Dosage in case of gastroenteritis

In case of gastroenteritis with profuse diarrhoea accompanied by heavy and painful cold sweats, the patient should take a dose of Veratrum album 9 CH. A dose includes 5 granules, that must initially be swallowed every half hour. The intakes will then be spaced out once the patient’s health improves.

Dosage in case of intestinal bleeding

Intestinal bleeding is usually accompanied by asthenia followed by cold sweats. At that time, the patient has a constant need to get some fresh air. To remedy this, Veratrum album 4 CH should be administered every 10 minutes. During the treatment, the patient should not receive any stimulant substance. For this type of pathology, Veratrum album acts as an antihaemorrhagic and the treatment should not be discontinued until the intestinal bleeding stops.

Recommendations in case of spasmophilia

Spasmophilia, as well as tetany attacks and cramps resulting from painful and violent spams, can also be treated with Veratrum album. This homoeopathic remedy ensures the patient’s quick recovery after an attack.

Pathology and homeopathy are two fields of scientific research that go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, homeopathic research on a disease is always accompanied by a pathological study of that disease. Pathology is the scientific field that studies diseases, while homeopathy is a gentle method for treating diseases. Homeopathic treatment follows the principles of similarity (Similia similibus curentur or "likes are cured by likes") and comprehensiveness. There is no universal treatment for a given disease; it must be adapted to each patient.
